Company
History
HEATH &
SHERWOOD was founded in 1927 by Messrs. C. Heath and S. Sherwood,
to serve the dual purpose as a diamond drilling contractor and a manufacturer of diamond
drilling equipment for local clients in the Kirkland Lake area of Ontario.
In 1951, the contract drilling portion of Heath
and Sherwood Drilling Limited was split from the manufacturing business and sold to
Mr. J.W. McBean, a geologist at Upper Canada Mines.
Mr. McBean renamed the company to Heath
& Sherwood Drilling in 1972 and amalgamated it as a division of Upper Canada
Resources Ltd. (U.C.R.), a company he formed that also controlled Bankeno and Queenston
Mines, Becker Drills Inc., Brinkerhoff Drilling, Drill Systems and an interest in Pilot
Diamond Tools.
Five years later in 1977, Turbo Resources
Ltd. of Calgary purchased all the assets of U.C.R. including Heath and Sherwood
Drilling which became a division of Challenger International Services Ltd., one of the
Turbo Group of Companies. In 1984, Challenger International Services Ltd. was split from
the Turbo group in a plan of reorganization and renamed Challenger Resource Services Ltd.
Challenger Resource Services Company was focused primarily as an oil and gas drilling
company and it became apparent that providing diamond drilling services was of little
interest to Challenger, thus in 1986 a group comprised of experienced management employees
and investors bought the drilling company from Challenger Resources and incorporated
themselves as HEATH & SHERWOOD DRILLING (1986) INC.
Operationally during the late 1960's and
early 1970's, HEATH & SHERWOOD developed a technique for "Slim Hole"
drilling for oil and gas and although the oil industry did not accept the development at
that time, the equipment an HS 150 was converted to drill very deep hard rock holes
over 10,000 feet deep primarily in the Sudbury Basin.
In the early 1980's these HS 150
drills operated for a sister company, Universal Drillers in South Africa, where they cored
the deepest wireline hole in the world to 17,800 feet, clearly establishing HEATH &
SHERWOOD as the recognised leader in this technology.
HEATH & SHERWOOD became involved in small hole reverse
circulation drilling in the 1970's and pioneered many of the techniques now in use for
overburden sample drilling. This method of overburden sampling is an economical means for
initial exploration of an area, which is followed later by diamond drill testing of the
bedrock, where required.
Other advances in drilling techniques by HEATH
& SHERWOOD include the successful development of:
our own design of reverse circulation
rods manufactured in Kirkland Lake,
a retrievable wedge system and
straight hole drilling techniques,
all of which have unquestionably
established the company as the leader in the drilling of "Directional or
Controlled" holes.
In addition to surface drilling services HEATH
& SHERWOOD operates a fleet of technologically advanced underground electric
hydraulic drills capable of drilling depths of 5,000 feet of N size core.
Other services provided by HEATH &
SHERWOOD includes supervision and labour contracts, training programs, equipment
selection and procurement and drill parts and drill consumable supply. We supply parts to
operators from the Arctic in the north to the Caribbean in the south.
Our Domestic market is located in
northern Ontario and the Canadian Arctic. Our international activity is focussed on
serving Central and South America and the Caribbean. Our international service in these
areas exceeds 20 years. Since 1993, this activity has been managed through Heath &
Sherwood International Inc.
HEATH & SHERWOOD
is committed to increasing efficiencies in all the facets of drilling that we offer. We
either develop or purchase new technology whenever possible. HEATH & SHERWOOD
boasts over 155 years of combined experience to projects undertaken with our clients
anywhere in the world. We have the knowledge and experience that results in a hands on,
